What counts in design
Speakers and topics unveiled for premier design forum
Future trends across brand communication, commercial and eco-design and colour forecasting will be central themes
at this year’s International Seminar Series, a highlight of designEX where visitors will be educated and inspired by
some of the most progressive local and international design professionals.
Held in Melbourne this 19 – 21 April as a key component of designEX, Australasia’s most prestigious contemporary
design and architectural forum, the International Seminar Series (sponsored by Kohler) will be broken into three
components: seminars, where a host of speakers will give conference style presentations; workshops with
interaction and individual engagement between the speaker and visitors; and the new (At Lunch With…) series,
where visitors can dine with the biggest names in the business and debate design issues of the day in an intimate
luncheon environment. A range of seminars, workshops and (At Lunch With…) series will take place daily.

they need to excel in design for the years ahead.”

them remain relevant and competitive by taking control of their destiny – before the future
controls them. Elmwood has offices in the United Kingdom and Australia, represents some of the world’s most
recognised brands such as Wal-Mart and the BBC. They are also the recipient of more than 100 awards such as The

DESIGNEX WOWS SYDNEY WITH INNOVATION AND INSPIRATION
New products, stimulating discussions, emerging designers and elaborate product displays have featured at designEX 2006. More than 22,000 trade visitors attended the visually appealing three day exhibition, held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th April.
New products are highlights of the event, and the designEX New Product Awards recognise the most exciting and innovative products available in Australia. The awards are judged on excellence in design and manufacture, innovative features, ergonomic design, functionality, aesthetics, durability, versatility, safety features, commercial viability and environmental sensitivity.
The awards are supported by Axolotl Group and infolink and were judged by an independent panel including Nicole Bearman (Powerhouse Museum), Sharon Campbell (Whitehouse Institute of Design), Brook Turner (Australian Financial Review Magazine), Eva-Marie Prineas (Prineas Architects), Gerard Rheinmuth (Terroir) and Kate St James (Universal Magazines). The 2006 winners are:
LIGHTING - Baresque: Architectural Finishes, MGX
The MGX range of lights is made by using a three-dimensional printing method to create organic structures that would be impossible using any other production method. The rapid prototyping technology can be compared to an inkjet printer, where a 3D object is constructed by adding one slice on top of another in a vessel of liquid resin that is hardened by a laser beam.
BATHROOMWARE – Kohler, Purist Hatbox Toilet
A high-fashion product that is destined to redefine common perceptions of what the traditional toilet should look like. The stylish “tank-less” design of the toilet was achieved by using an electric pump inside the toilet. It’s incredibly easy to clean and the toilet seat is ergonomically designed to prevent the seat slamming and eliminates unnecessary contact with the underside of the seat.
FURNITURE – Axolotl Group, Signature Doors
Axolotl identified a growing consumer demand for different styles of doors to individualise their homes. The company forged partnerships with nine of Australia’s leading architects to incorporate metal into a unique door design to form the ‘Signature’ series.
FABRIC - Salu Art, Textile Screen Print Collection, ‘Seeds’
Salu Art’s collection of hand screen-printed textiles is renowned for it’s bold, elegant and modern designs and effective use of colour. The ‘Seeds’ range is inspired by the flora in Perth’s King’s Park, and shows larger than life organic silhouettes in rich hues and familiar landscapes depicted against shimmering satin backdrops.
HARDWARE - Silent Gliss, Silent Gliss Skylight
The Silent Gliss Skylight provides an innovative and elegant way of shading large glass roofs, lobbies or large winter gardens by combining side profiles and fabric panels. The panels can be tilted and fully retracted in order to optimise daylight management. The concept of using fabric louvers on glazing enables the sun to be redirected to radically alter the look, feel and temperature of a room.
KITCHEN APPLIANCES – Pyrolave, Pyrolave Induction
This revolutionary induction unit can be placed directly on Pyrolave’s kitchen benches, which are made from glazed lava stone from France. Magnetic pots or pans can be placed within the cooking ring, which is designed to sense the pot or pan. With the twist of a dial, the heat passes through the stone to the pan giving absolute control to boil, fry or simmer.
SURFACE FINISHES - Trend Windows & Doors, Xtreme Bushfire Protection Windows & Doors
Trend Windows & Doors, in conjunction with the CSIRO, has spent two years researching how to better protect homes from damage caused by bushfires through window and door failure. The result is the new window technology, Xtreme Windows, which can withstand the highest levels of heat reached by extreme range bushfires (40KW/sqm of radiant heat).
FLOORING - Bamboo Australia, Peerless Bamboo
Peerless Bamboo is manufactured from sustainable bamboo forests and is installed as a floating floor system which enables the floor to remain cool in Summer and warm in Winter while remaining soft underfoot throughout the year. The Peerless Bamboo range is available in three styles and two colours.
The designEX Best Stand Awards are another highlight of designEX and this year’s stands were judged on visual impact and design innovation, lighting, flooring and wall finishes, signage, stand layout and product/space ratio, visitor enticement (competitions, special offers, attention gatherers, hospitality on stand) and staff presentation (enthusiasm, available to visitors, identifiable). Janice Cameron from Nexus, Zoe Sabados from Home Beautiful and architect Josh Morrin judged these awards.
The Best Stand Award winners for designEX 2006 are:
Less than 20sqm - Birk
21sqm - 70sqm - Mei & Picchi
More than 70sqm - Omega Smeg
The SIDA Best Dressed Stand Award was won by Inovita-vitra, with an honourable mention given to the Axolotl Group.
Latitude, sponsored by MONUMENT and Home Beautiful gave young dynamic designers an opportunity to present their work to the industry at designEX. The exhibition was presented on a sporting field and highlights included a teapot inspired by the flow and movement of fluid, a ‘pregnant chair’ that fits a smaller chair in it, a stool made from used road signs and a light designed using traditional origami techniques.
The designEX International Seminar Series was an inspiring collection of ideas and updates from industry leaders including the Keynote Speaker Michael McDonough, who spoke about his experience of building a house in New York State that challenges our ideas of green building techniques. Architect Henry Feiner remembered the work of Harry Seidler, innovative designer Luke Everingham explained how he has built a house that rotates 360 degrees and visitors also heard about the latest colour trends from the International School of Colour and Design’s Prue Royle.
The Interior Trends Market Week Fashion Café gave visitors a chance to see the latest patterns, textures and colours in the world of fabrics as part of dynamic fashion parades styled by The Whitehouse Institute of Design. This was one of the visual highlights of designEX.
designEX incorporates Interior Trends Market Week, the official trade exhibition of the Textile Distributors Association and lightEX, the official trade exhibition of IES: The Lighting Society. designEX is co-located with Form & Function, an event featuring products and services for the external architectural, building and construction industries and the 2006 National Conference of The Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
The Interior Design Awards, where Australia’s leading interior experts are acknowledged, was held to coincide with designEX on Friday 7th April. Winners included John Henry Architects, which won the Residential Interior Design Award for Research House (VIC). The Spatial Research Group from Monash University’s Faculty of Arts won the Hospitality Interior Design Award and the Award for Interior Design Excellence and Innovation for its Solivoid Project. For more information on the Interior Design Awards, visit www.interiordesignawards.com.au.
designEX is organised by the international exhibition company, dmg world media.
